Google Business Profile in Ghana: Using Your Digital Address
Many Ghanaian businesses rely on a GhanaPostGPS code to be found, but Google's address field doesn't always understand it. This guide shows how to combine the two so customers searching on Google Maps can reach your door.

Key takeaways
- On Google Business Profile, the map pin does the navigation work. Your digital address is a helpful extra, not a replacement for an accurate pin.
- Generate your GhanaPostGPS code standing in front of your premises, and aim for the app's most accurate reading.
- If Google can't find your street address, you can place the pin directly on the map.
- Businesses that visit customers, rather than receive them, should hide their address and set service areas.
- Always test the result from a customer's phone, using mobile data, before you share the link.
How Google handles Ghanaian addresses
Your Google Business Profile needs one thing above all to send customers to you: a pin on the exact spot where you serve them. Google's address form expects a street address. Where that is hard to pin down, as in many parts of Accra, Kumasi or Takoradi, Google lets you place the pin directly on the map.
Google's guidelines also allow cross-streets and nearby landmarks, but only where the official street address doesn't pinpoint the business. So "Opposite the district police station" is acceptable only when your street address alone won't get people there. Never add keywords, phone numbers or links to the address lines.
If you visit customers instead of receiving them, the rules change. A caterer, plumber or mobile hairdresser working from home should hide the address and list service areas instead. Google allows up to 20 areas, and the whole area should sit within about two hours' drive of your base.
Where your GhanaPostGPS address fits
GhanaPostGPS is Ghana's official digital addressing system. It divides the country into 5m × 5m squares and gives each square a code. The official example is AK-039-5028, the Kumasi Main Post Office. AK is the region and district (Ashanti, Kumasi), 039 is the area code and 5028 is the unique address.
Google's help pages don't mention GhanaPostGPS codes, so don't count on Google Maps understanding one typed into its search box. Treat the code as an extra detail for people, and let the pin guide them. The table shows where the code helps most.
| Place | What to put there | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Google pin | Your exact entrance, placed by hand if needed | This is what Google Maps navigates to |
| Address line on Google | Your street address, with the digital address if you use it on official documents | Matches the address customers see elsewhere |
| Business description | Optional short mention, after what you do | The description is mainly for your services, not directions |
| Website contact page | Street address, digital address, landmark and an embedded map | One place with every way to find you |
| WhatsApp Business | Digital address and your Google Maps link in the profile | Customers often ask for directions in chat |
| Signboard and invoices | The same address you used on Google | Consistency builds trust and avoids confusion |
Generate the code standing in front of your premises. The GhanaPostGPS help page says a green reading means you are within about 3 to 9 metres.
Placing the pin accurately
To move your pin, open your profile, select Edit profile, then Location, and edit the business location. Choose Adjust, move the map until the pin sits on your entrance, then save. Google says most changes appear in about 10 minutes, but some take up to 30 days.
Put the pin on the door customers use, not the middle of the compound. In a shopping centre or office block, pin the entrance nearest your unit and name the floor in the address.
- 1Stand at your entrance and note the GhanaPostGPS code and its accuracy colour.
- 2In Google Maps on the same spot, long-press to drop a pin and note the plus code, Google's own short location code.
- 3Compare that spot with your current Google pin. If they differ, adjust the pin in your profile.
- 4Ask a customer to report if directions ever stop short or lead to a back gate.
Anyone using Google Maps can suggest an edit to a wrong pin or address. Check your profile now and then, and correct it from your own account.

Directions and photos that help first-time visitors
Even with a perfect pin, the last 50 metres can be confusing. Photos solve much of this. Google says an exterior photo helps customers recognise your business when they arrive.
Add a clear daytime photo of your frontage and signboard, taken from the road. Add one of the entrance if it sits behind a gate or up a staircase. Keep them sharp and unfiltered, as Google asks.
Use your description and website for a short line of directions, such as the landmark you face. Keep it factual and brief.
Checking your Google Business Profile from a customer's phone
Your view as the owner is not what customers see. Borrow a phone that isn't signed in to your account, switch to mobile data and run through this checklist.
- Search your business name and your main service plus your area. Does your profile appear?
- Tap Directions from a nearby junction. Does the route end at your entrance?
- Check the address lines. Are they free of keywords and do they match your signboard?
- Look at the photos. Would a first-time visitor recognise your frontage?
- Tap Call and the website link. Do both work?
- Search your plus code in Google Maps. Does it land on the same spot as your pin?
Repeat the check after any move, renovation or new signboard.

Frequently asked questions
Can I put my GhanaPostGPS address on Google?
Yes, you can include it as part of your address or mention it briefly in your description. Google doesn't document support for these codes in search, so make sure your map pin is accurate, because that is what directions use.
Which address format does Google accept in Ghana?
Google asks for your real-world address with building, floor or unit details. Where the street address doesn't pinpoint you, cross-streets and nearby landmarks are allowed. If Google can't find the address, place the pin on the map yourself.
What if Google places my pin in the wrong area?
Edit your profile, open Location and use Adjust to move the pin to your entrance. Changes usually appear within minutes but can take up to 30 days. Check again later, because Maps users can suggest pin changes.
How do customers get directions to me?
They tap Directions on your profile in Google Search or Maps. You can also send your Google Maps link and digital address on WhatsApp, so they can use whichever app they prefer.
Should I hide my address if I work from home?
Yes, if customers don't visit you there. Google asks service-area businesses to hide the address and list the areas they serve instead, up to 20 areas.
