Digital marketing is any way of finding and winning customers through the internet. That covers search, ads, social media, email, WhatsApp and your website. This guide explains each part in plain words and which ones matter most for a small business.

Key takeaways

  • Digital marketing means using the internet to get found, get chosen and get paid. It is much more than social media.
  • Search and your Google Business Profile catch people who already want what you sell. Ads buy you speed. Social media builds trust over time.
  • Most small businesses should start with a Google profile, a simple website and a fast way to reply on WhatsApp, then add one paid channel.
  • Judge results by enquiries and sales, not likes or visits.

Digital marketing in one paragraph

Digital marketing is how you find and win customers online. It covers the places people look for a business, such as Google, Maps, Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. It also covers what happens next: your website, your replies and your follow-up.

In plain terms, it has three jobs. First, help the right people find you. Second, give them a reason to pick you. Third, make it easy for them to call, message, book or pay.

So no, digital marketing is not only social media. Social media is one channel among several. For many local businesses it is not even the one that brings the first paying customer.

What people search for

Our analysis of Google Ads keyword data shows about 12,100 searches a month for “digital marketing” in South Africa, with medium advertiser competition and top-of-page bids of up to €2.16.

What are the main types of digital marketing?

There are five main channels. Each one does a different job, costs a different kind of effort and works at a different speed. The table below is our map of them. The cost and speed columns are our view, not measured figures.

Search: SEO and Google Business Profile

SEO stands for search engine optimisation. Google describes it as helping search engines understand your content, so people can find your site. In practice that means clear pages that answer what your customers search for.

SEO is slow. Google says some changes show in a few hours, while others can take several months. Nobody can promise you the top spot, and Google itself says there is no secret that will rank a site first.

Your Google Business Profile is the free listing that shows your business on Search and Maps. It holds your hours, phone number, photos and reviews. For a shop, clinic or firm that serves a local area, it is often the quickest win.

Search catches people who already want what you sell. That is why it usually brings better enquiries than channels where you interrupt people.

Paid ads: how Google and Meta ads work

Paid ads let you pay to appear in front of people right away. The two big options are Google Ads and Meta ads, which run on Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and more.

Google Ads shows your ad when people search for words you choose. With cost-per-click bidding, you pay only when someone clicks your ad. You set an average daily budget. Google says spend can go up to twice that on a busy day, but not above your monthly limit.

Meta ads show your ad to people based on who they are and what they like, even if they are not searching. You set a daily or a lifetime budget. Meta says it may spend more on some days, and the cost depends on your goal, your ad and your audience.

The key point is simple. Ads work only while you pay. When you stop, the enquiries stop too. So use them for speed, and build search and reviews for the long run.

Social media, email and WhatsApp

Social media is where people check you out and keep up with you. Posting your work, prices and reviews builds trust. It rarely brings a flood of new buyers on its own, so treat it as a trust channel.

Email and WhatsApp are for people who already know you. The free WhatsApp Business app gives you a catalogue of your products, quick replies for common questions, labels to sort chats, and greeting and away messages.

For many small businesses, WhatsApp is where the sale actually happens. A fast, clear reply there can matter more than a clever post.

Why your website still matters

Your website is the place every other channel points to. Ads, search results and your Google profile all send people there. If the page is slow, vague or has no clear way to get in touch, you pay for visits that go nowhere.

A good small business site does not need to be big. It needs to say what you do, where you work, what it costs or how pricing works, and how to reach you in one tap.

How the channels work together

The channels are not rivals. They form a path, from first sight to paid invoice. Here is a common route a customer takes.

  1. 1They see your ad on Instagram or hear about you from a friend.
  2. 2Later, they search your name or your service on Google.
  3. 3Your Google profile shows good reviews and your hours.
  4. 4They visit your website to check prices and your work.
  5. 5They send a WhatsApp message or call, and you reply fast.
  6. 6After the sale, you follow up on WhatsApp or email and ask for a review.

A weak link anywhere loses the customer. Fixing a slow reply on WhatsApp is often cheaper than buying more ads.

What matters most for a small business

If your time and money are tight, do not try every channel at once. Start with the ones that catch people who already need you, then add reach.

This is the order we suggest for most small businesses. Adjust it if your buyers mostly find you in a different way.

  1. 1Set up and complete your Google Business Profile, and ask happy customers for reviews.
  2. 2Make sure you have a simple, fast website with a clear way to enquire.
  3. 3Set up WhatsApp Business with quick replies and a catalogue, and reply fast.
  4. 4Add one paid channel: Google Ads if people search for your service, Meta ads if they need to discover it.
  5. 5Post on one social platform regularly, rather than on five now and then.

Do it yourself, freelancer or agency?

You can do a lot yourself. A Google profile, WhatsApp Business and basic social posts need time, not special skills. Paid ads and SEO take more learning, and mistakes there cost money or months.

Who should run your digital marketing?
OptionGood forWatch out for
Do it yourselfGoogle profile, WhatsApp, social posts, asking for reviewsIt eats time you could spend on the business
FreelancerOne clear task, such as a website or an ad campaignGaps when tasks overlap, and one person's availability
AgencyJoining several channels into one plan with trackingVague reports, lock-in and anyone who promises rankings

Whoever you hire, ask them how they will measure enquiries and sales. If they only talk about likes and traffic, keep looking.

How to tell if it's working

Measure what pays your bills: calls, messages, bookings and sales. Likes and visits are signs, not results.

Google Analytics lets you mark the actions that matter as key events, such as a form sent or a WhatsApp button tapped. Your Google Business Profile also shows calls and direction requests. Check these once a month.

  • Count enquiries each month, and note where each one came from.
  • Ask every new customer how they found you.
  • For ads, divide what you spent by the number of enquiries it brought.
  • Compare this month with the last three, not with last week.
  • Drop or fix any channel that costs money but brings no enquiries after a fair test.

Frequently asked questions

What is digital marketing in simple words?

It is using the internet to find customers and win their business. That includes Google, ads, social media, WhatsApp, email and your website.

Is digital marketing only social media?

No. Social media is one channel. Search, your Google profile, paid ads, WhatsApp, email and your website are all part of digital marketing too.

Which type of digital marketing is best for a small business?

For most small businesses, the best start is a complete Google Business Profile, a simple website and fast WhatsApp replies. Then add one paid channel that suits how your buyers look for you.

Can I do digital marketing myself?

Yes, for the basics. Your Google profile, WhatsApp Business and social posts need time more than skill. Paid ads and SEO take longer to learn, so many owners get help with those.

How long does digital marketing take to work?

It depends on the channel. Ads can bring clicks the day they go live. SEO often takes weeks to months, and Google says some changes can take several months to show.
